Amsterdam

I love Amsterdam, with all its climbing passion fruit vines, fig trees and glazed art nouveau tiles. Here's a guide to some of my favorite places.

Architectura & Natura:
Leliegracht 22-H, Grachtengordel-West.

An amazing bookshop dedicated exclusively to books about architecture, design and nature. The store has a really impressive and wide selection of books. The very helpful staff also run their own publishing house called Architectura & Natura Press.

Toki:
Binnen Dommersstraat 15, Harlemmerburt.

This cafe knows its stuff. Great coffee, great cakes and great reads available. It's a cool and calm place.

Rijksmuseum:
Museumsstraat 1, Museumkwartier.

Holland's main collection of art and objects from 1100 to 1950. The museum houses many dutch masterpieces as well as impressionist works like Monet, Van Gogh and Breitner. The building itself has been brilliantly renovated, and combines new and old architecture in an inspiring way. There are several nice and small cafes throughout the museum, and a great museum shop.

Restaurant Marius:
Barentszstraat 173, Zeeheldenbuurt.

I love this place. The warm interior, the seasonal food and the passionate staff. This is a must-visit. Everything from the table linen to the tea selection feels very thought trough and genuine. There is a special harmonious, neighbourhood vibe, that would be hard to replicate elsewhere.

Sarphatipark:
De Pijp

What a park! Beautifully laid out, surrounded by nice houses and close proximity to cafes and shops. Extremely clean and comfortable. Lively, yet calm. People here spread out in a pleasant way, just enjoying themselves and happily coexisting.

George WPA:
Willemsparkweg 74, Museumskwartier.

This is where to go for classic dishes like Moules Frites, and is definitely a lovely place to sit outside. It's one of those restaurants that is just really nice and easy to deal with.

Hortus Botanicus:
Plantage Middenlaan 2a, Plantage.

This is more than a botanical garden, it's also a cafe placed in a beautiful orangery built in 1875. The cafe occasionally puts on concerts and other events. There is an incredibly relaxed and radiant vibe in this large space, which features two palm trees growing in the ground inside it. Amongst some of the highlights of the garden itself, are the banana palm trees bearing fruit, a butterfly house and a bamboo garden.
