Great Cafés in Oslo

Java
Ullevålsveien 47

This is an absolute favorite. The coffee, tea and hot chocolate here is really great. Equally amazing are the baked goods and the sandwiches that they serve. Everything feels homemade and thoughtful. The last time I visited, I had a white bean puree sandwich with pickled red onions and herbs - the recipe of which, the barista at work had composed himself. Life is easy at Java. The mood here is serene, but always full of life. The interiors are extraordinary. Beautiful paint color, great wooden panels and an all over great harmony.

Vespa & Humla
Københavngata 2

One of my other favorites! This is both a café and restaurant, and is an extremely welcoming place. All the great custom-made details and furniture, make up a unique and gorgeous whole. There are lots of plants and very comfortable lighting. The staff here is accommodating and friendly. The food and wine is good. Vespa & Humla has that lived in feel, which I really appreciate.

Samson Grünerløkka
Thorvald Meyers gate 27

Samson is Oslo's oldest bakery chain, and it was established in 1894. This is my favorite of the Samson cafés. Its interiors are really well put together. Classic and modern at the same time. There are lots of custom-made furniture and details here as well, such as the beautiful fireplace, which they often light in the fall and winter. The chairs are designed by Jasper Morrison, and called Lightwood chair. An important feature of this café is the stone oven pizza that they serve in the afternoons and evenings from wednesday to sunday. It is excellent, and easily the best pizza in the city. They always make it really quickly, and I really enjoy never having to wait for long.

Åpent Bakeri Åsengata
Åsengata 42

This is a place of great style and grace. There are very few cafés in Oslo with interiors as admirable as this venue of Åpent Bakeri, which lies in the northern part of Torshov. There are wooden panels, red velvet curtains and beautiful lamps. The checkerboard floor gives a good contrast to the walls and furniture. I also love the fact that they have Scandia jr.-chairs, designed by Hans Brattrud, throughout the space. As part of one of the few good café chains in town, Åpent Bakeri has quality products to offer, and rarely disappoints.

Stockfleths Gamlebyen
Munkegata 2b

Speaking of chains, Stockfleths is another good café chain in Oslo. I love coming here! They focus on top-notch products and everything I've had here has been really great! An example is how their muffins are always really moist and full of flavour. This is a great place to sit and look through the big windows, and enjoy the view of the activities on the street. It is a comfortable place to hang out. The leather/steel stools are designed by Toke Lauridsen and called the Adam stool.

Å Kafé og Bar
Henrik Ibsens gate 110

An exciting newcomer! I've only been here twice yet, but I'm already impressed. This café and bar lies on the second floor of Nasjonalbiblioteket - the National library. I think that the combination of a café/bar and a library is great! Å Kafe og Bar has an above average selection of tea, coffee, drinks and sandwiches. They even serve a full set up of afternoon tea. The staff is really cool, and seem to enjoy themselves. They make all their syrups for the drinks from scratch. I love the view through the unusually large windows. There are also beautiful fresco paintings by Axel Revold and Per Krohg in the stairwell close to the cafe.
