Oslo

Oslo is my hometown, and one of my favorite cities on earth. Oslo has it all; parks, forests and beaches. This guide will lead you to some of the most exciting places, including a field of ancient grains which lies right in the middle of the city center!

Hvervenbukta:
Ljansbrukveien 4c

Hvervenbukta is one of the greatest beach areas in town. It is easier to access than one might think. It's only a short bus ride from the city center. The beach lies on the grounds of a former manor house and farm, and the area also features beautiful paths and views (pictured below).

Anne på landet:
Ljansbrukveien 6

Anne på landet is a cafe at Hvervenbukta. It's placed in two separate buildings. They are both from the time of the former manor house, and the building in the picture dates from the 18th century. The cafe offers good organic coffee, homemade baked goods and nice sandwiches. It's a great place to stop by when taking a stroll in the area.

Sydstranda:
Måkeveien 26

This is a seriously great beach! It lies on an island called Ulvøya, which can be reached by bus. As far as I know, this is the only beach in Oslo that charges a small fee for visits, but it is well worth it. The beach is made up of three parts. A large beach, a smaller beach and a cliff area. There is also a beautiful diving board - an architectural gem.

Losæter:
Kongshavnveien

Losæter is Oslo's own city center farm. A farmer has been hired to farm this small area at Sørenga close to the Opera house. There are also various organizations who participate in the project, and this patch of land feels like a very inspired place. A plethora of vegetables and edible flowers grow here. There is also a quite large field of ancient grains, such as emmer and einkorn wheat. Go there and be inspired.

The park by Biermannsgården:
Maridalsveien 78

A small park that lies by an old building called Biermannsgården. It now houses a music foundation. The neighbourhood around the park is one of my absolute favorites. Some of the oldest residential buildings from the mid-19th century industrial era lie here, and it's a great area to go for a stroll. One of the amazing features of the park, is the many public berry bushes of raspberries and blackcurrants. The house on the corner of the park (far left in the picture), sometimes arranges a small antiques market in the street right outside the park. I go to this park again and again, and there is hardly any people here. A quiet and serene place.

Linderud gård:
Trondheimsveien 319

A museum which seems to be quite unknown to Oslo residents and tourists alike. However, Linderud gård is amazing and undoubtedly worth a visit. It is a large manor house and renaissance garden, which offers guided tours and various musical events etc. Earlier this year, I attended a seminar about the historical photographic collection of the family who once lived here. The elaborate collection has recently been digitalized and is accessible online on Digitalt Museum. The interiors of Linderud gård are gorgeous. Each of the many rooms have their own individual and unique beauty. The garden is large and also really wonderful.

Oslo rådhus:
Rådhusplassen 1

Oslo rådhus - the city hall of Oslo, is a place that one should definitely visit, and revisit many times. The fresco paintings here are of extreme beauty. Each hall and room has an exhilarating combination of colors and materials. The quality of the many different materials is really great. The rooms are tremendously large-scale and all these elements constitute a breathtaking whole!

Oslo K:
Jacob Aalls gate 54

My favorite cafe in Oslo. Oslo K lies in the neighbourhood called Fagerborg, or more specifically Jessenløkken. The cafe has beautiful vines growing on the facade, and several great outdoor tables in front. The pastries, tea and coffee that they serve is always great. A visit here offers a fine opportunity to enjoy the nearby square, beautiful tall trees and life passing by. Oslo K is also a design agency with a studio close by. The owner has great taste, and has hand picked all the antique plates and the other elements of the interior of the cafe.

Rouleur:
Ullevålsveien 16a

A relatively new cafe and bar at St. Hanshaugen. Rouleur is an excellent place to enjoy an afternoon or evening with a good cup of coffee, a glass of wine or a drink. They also offer great baked goods. Rouleur has a fabulous interior which is reason enough to go there. The space feels really thought trough in terms of the furnishings, the tableware and the art on the walls.
